Justin Trudeau shocked and disrupted Canadian politics, and took back Canada from an increasingly narrow-minded and self-centred government of Steven Harper, in a brilliantly run campaign that took the high road, and stressed traditional Canadian values of inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, tolerance and compassion, rather than negativity, fear and division, and won an overwhelming election victory over the Conservatives.
After more than a decade of a Conservative Government under the leadership of Steven Harper, that became ever more intolerant, unaccountable and fascist, for each mandate they won (a total of three terms), Canadians overwhelmingly voted for a young, determined and charismatic leader (Justin Trudeau) of the Liberal Party, who took his Party from a distant third place (only 34 seats) at the start of the election, to a full majority government (184 seats from a total of 338). By voting for Trudeau, Canadians rejected Harper’s corrosive-style of government that divided and polarized people internally, and on the World stage made Canada more like the United States (which Harper openly emulated), putting its own self interests first, above the collective global interests, in issues regarding the environment, climate change, international disputes and human rights.
By voting for Trudeau, Canadians voted to reverse 10 years of Canada’s regression as a World leader that stood for all that was good, fair and just, regardless of politics, race, colour or religion, whether within Canada, or internationally.
In a fractured and conflict-torn World, that is divided along partisan lines of political ideologies, religious intolerance, massive inequality, exploitation, cruel and callous indifference to conflict displaced people, and horrendous levels of poverty, and threatened by environmental degradation and climate change, Harper’s government was generally indifferent and disengaged. Canadians tolerated that very un-Canadian like position for the past decade for the promise of economic prosperity and security. But, as the global economies shrank and China unravelled, resource-rich countries like Canada felt the impact of low commodity prices and shrinking demand, and Canadians came to realize that they will need a more imaginative government than Steven Harper’s to cope with a fast changing World. And, coupling that realization with the yearning to get back to the ‘traditional good Canadian values’, expected by Canadians and recognized and admired abroad, but rejected by the Conservatives, Canadians voted to care again, and ousted Steven Harper in favour of Justin Trudeau.
Justin Trudeau promised to bring the change that Canadians are looking for within Canada, and in its role internationally, and the voters overwhelmingly believed him. Justin Trudeau promised Canadians change, to bring Canada back to its most cherished values of openness, accountability, fairness, tolerance, economic diversity, and global leadership, and Canadians responded overwhelmingly to his call for support by giving him a majority government, and representation from coast to coast to coast.
